June
16, 2005 to April 17, 2006 - Albert Einstein’s
Longines watch on display at the Historisches Museum in
Bern, Switzerland
The exhibition is the most comprehensive and expensive
event devoted to Albert Einstein ever staged. It is running
from
June 16, 2005 to April 17, 2006 at the Historisches Museum
in Switzerland’s capital city of Bern. Named “person
of the century” by Time Magazine, Albert Einstein lived
in Bern from 1902 to 1909 – the most scientifically
fruitful period of his life. His Longines pocket watch
is being displayed for the first time at this exhibition
as
an eloquent reminder that with his theory of relativity
Einstein changed forever our perception of the nature of
Time.

Longines pocket watch
built in 1943, formerly owned by Albert Einstein.
Its case houses a hand-wound Longines proprietary L37.93
movement. The dial features a subdial for the seconds
at 6 o’clock and black painted Arabic numerals.
It was invoiced to Wirth & Cie of Geneva, at the
time Longines’ agent for the Swiss market,
on January 29, 1946, for Stahel Jewelers in Zurich.
It
was donated by Henry E. Bovay to the Historisches
Museum in Bern and publicly displayed for the first
time as
part of an exhibition devoted to Albert Einstein.
