27 : Launch of the Longines Special Edition “7 Wonders
of the Ancient World” (Lisbon, Portugal)
Also this year Portugal
will go down in History as the place where the world
elected once again, the 7 wonders
of the Modern World. 2007 is also an important year to
Boutique dos Relógios, that celebrates its 10th
anniversary and together with Longines developed this
partnership with the aim of contributing to recover and
maintain the symbols that are the greatest landmarks
of the History of the Planet.
The 7 wonders of the ancient world are a list of great
artistic and architectural wonders built during the Classical
Antiquity, also known as Ta Hepta Tharmata (the seven
things worth seeing). Wars, time and cataclysms reduced
6 of the 7 wonders to souvenirs. The Great Pyramids of
Giza, built 5 thousand years ago, are the sole remaining “survivor” out
of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World.
The authors of this list are not well determined, being
generally attributed to the Greek Antipater of Sidon,
writer and poet. The list is also present in the book “De
Septem Orbis Miraculis” of the engineer Philo of
Byzantium. In fact, the Greeks were the ones that between
150 and 120BC referred to the Seven Wonders of the World
for the first time. The form and structure of the monuments
have been imagined and recreated throughout time based
on references in historical documents and reproductions
on coins and other objects.
A Special Window based in the Temple of Artemis was created
to present the Special Edition.
