Gymnastics as an Olympic Discipline - Background Information
 

Artistic Gymnastics
There are four competitions in men's and women's artistic gymnastics:

I - The qualifications (individuals and teams)
II – The all-around individual competition
III – The apparatus finals

IV – The teams competition
The jury

The men compete on six apparatus:

floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar.

The women compete on four apparatus :
vault, asymmetrical bars, beam and floor.

Since 1992, the minimum age for competing in women's Olympic gymnastics has been fifteen, men must be at least sixteen.

 
Rhythmic Gymnastics
There are four competitions in women's rhythmic gymnastics:

I - The qualifications (individuals and teams)
II – The all-around individual competition
III – The apparatus finals
IV – The teams competition
The jury

The program comprises exercises on the 4 given apparatus
(rope, hoop, ball, indian clubs or ribbon) for that year's program.

Technical performance, artistic merit and execution are taken
into equal consideration in judging, which is based on scoring.
The group or individual with the highest score wins.

Since 1992, the minimum age for women gymnasts for this Olympic discipline is fifteen.
