Official launch of the Longines Tracking System at Royal Ascot

Ascot (UK) / Saint-Imier (Switzerland), 21 June 2018 – Longines and Ascot Racecourse are proud to announce the official launch of the Swiss watch brand’s innovative Longines Tracking System, which was successfully inaugurated during the prestigious Royal Meeting, on Wednesday 20th of June. Ascot Racecourse thus becomes the first racecourse to be equipped with the system. This game-changing timing and tracking system – a world premiere in the horse racing industry – provides instant data on the exact position of horses during a race, race rankings, the distance between horses as well as their acceleration and deceleration. In addition, it measures the horses’ covered and remaining distance in the race.

Entirely based on satellite data, the Longines Tracking System boasts extreme accuracy, without any permanent installation on the racecourse, as required by the currently existing tracking systems. Developed in collaboration with Swiss Timing, the system represents a technological break-through in the horseracing industry, as it enables the most prestigious racecourses across the globe – including those located in protected historical or natural sites - to have access to such advanced technologies.

Juan-Carlos Capelli, Vice President and Head of International Marketing of Longines said: “For Longines, investing in technological advancements is the latest step in its long-term relationship with horseracing. The Longines Tracking System delivers a number of benefits to the sport and is a game-changer for the racing industry. We believe that live performance data enhances viewing experience and depth of understanding of the sport.”%break%Juliet Slot, Chief Commercial Officer, Ascot Racecourse commented: “We are delighted to have installed the new Longines Tracking System, adding valuable information to our racegoers and racing shareholders even now in the early days of its implementation. Longines as our Official Partner and Timekeeper has been committed to showcasing their system at Ascot and we are delighted with the results.”

Longines’ passion for equestrian sports dates back more than 140 years. In 1878 already, it produced a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount.  Seen on the racetracks as early as 1881 and extremely popular among jockeys and horse-lovers, this model enabled its user to time performances to the second. Longines’ involvement in equestrian sports includes show-jumping, flat racing, endurance, dressage, driving and eventing competitions. Longines chose to support equestrian sports as a perfect illustration of tradition, performance and elegance, which are the key values of the brand.

An elegant race day at Royal Ascot with Longines Ambassador of Elegance Eddie Peng

Characterized by a typical English sartorial elegance, Royal Ascot is considered worldwide to be one of the most prestigious sporting events in the calendar. After celebrating its ten-year partnership with Ascot in 2016, Longines proudly announced last week the renewal of its long-lasting association with the Berkshire racecourse. Under this agreement, the brand becomes an Official Partner of Ascot and continues its designation as Official Timekeeper and Watch. At Royal Ascot, the brand is also given an elevated profile, which includes stalls branding, on Wednesdays.

This day was thus chosen by Longines to invite its Ambassador of Elegance, acclaimed Asian actor Eddie Peng, to experience the Royal Meeting’s unique atmosphere. Following the remarkable victory of Kew Gardens in the Queens’ Vase, Eddie Peng, together with Longines Vice President and Head of International Marketing Juan-Carlos Capelli, presented Longines timepieces to the winning owners, lad, trainer Aidan O’Brien, jockey Ryan Moore. Later on that day, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall rewarded the winning connections of Poet’s Word with the brand’s timepieces as well.

In line with the refinement of the Royal Meeting, Longines is highlighting the Record collection as the Official Watch of the event. The automatic models in this line combine classic elegance and excellence, aspiring to become the spearheads of the brand. And there is no shortage of arguments for these exceptional timepieces, whose movement includes a single-crystal silicon balance spring with unique properties. In addition, they are certified as a “chronometer” by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), a designation awarded to all of the pieces in the Record collection.

Prix de Diane Longines 2018

The 169th edition of the Prix de Diane Longines saw the incredible victory of Laurens ridden by American jockey Patrick McDonald at the world’s most important race for fillies. The eagerly anticipated racing event took place at the sumptuous Chantilly racecourse on Sunday 17 June 2018 in front of thousands of spectators who flocked to watch the day’s eight thoroughbred races. As the Title Partner, Official Timekeeper and Watch of the event, Longines celebrated Laurens’ remarkable performance by awarding its owner, trainer and jockey with elegant timepieces. They were presented by Zhao Liying, Longines Ambassador of Elegance, who joined the Longines family in 2017 to mark the brand’s 185th anniversary. Renowned for her remarkable acting talent and widely recognised as a true style icon, Zhao Liying has over 60 million fans on Chinese platform Weibo.

At the emotional sporting event, Zineb El Briouil put in a winning performance on Beaupreau in the Prix Longines Future Racing Stars, which is open to young jockeys from riding schools across the world, allowing the winner to be granted a school bursary. Meanwhile amateur jockey Alice Bertiaux and her horse Ducale di Maremma took first place in brilliant style in the Prix de La Reine Marie-Amélie Longines, a race between female riders from FEGENTRI (International Federation of Gentlemen and Lady Riders). The watch brand has always been committed to showcasing the passion of up-and-coming talent and amateurs for their favourite sport, and it was therefore delighted to award the champions of the races with an elegant Longines watch.

At the day of races, imbued with its own unique brand of elegance, the event’s Official Watch was also revealed to spectators: a model from the Record collection. The line combines classic elegance and excellence with the aim of becoming one of the brand’s flagship ranges. Given their high accuracy, all the models in the Record collection have been certified as chronometers by the COSC (Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute). A timepiece belonging to the Record collection was presented by Zhao Liying to the most elegant female racegoer, Joana Contremoulin, the winner of the “Mademoiselle Diane by Longines” award.

In addition, Longines is delighted to be the main patron of the “Painting the Races” exhibition held at the Domain of Chantilly from 16 June to 14 October 2018. The brand is proud to be associated with the exhibition, which will allow the public to discover exceptional works featuring racehorses dating from the late 18th century to the late 19th century. The equestrian world has been of central importance to Longines for over 140 years.

Longines and Ascot Racecourse Sign Official Partnership Agreement

This will include use of the Longines logo on the Grandstand and permanent on-course and off-course branding, throughout the year.  The branded chronometer close to the winning post and elegant clock in the Parade Ring will remain in situ. Each Official Partner has a day at Royal Ascot where their brand is given an elevated profile, which includes stalls branding. The day on which this will operate for Longines will be Wednesday.

Longines will continue as ‘The Official Watch of Royal Ascot’, supplying timepieces to winning connections of any horse breaking a track record over the Flat racing season, as well as enjoying several individual race sponsorships, including the Group 3 Longines Sagaro Stakes in May, won by HM The Queen’s Estimate in 2013 on route to her victory in the Gold Cup at the Royal Meeting.

In line with its historical passion for horses and long term expertise in timekeeping, Longines is also proud to announce that it has developed an ultra-precise and world class timing and positioning system, which is currently in testing at Ascot with a view to launching shortly.

Juan-Carlos Capelli, Vice President and Head of International Marketing of Longines, commented: "Ascot is known worldwide as one of the most prestigious and stylish sporting events on the calendar, with over 300 years of rich history behind it. Juliet Slot, Chief Commercial Officer at Ascot, added: "Having worked with Longines for several years, it gives me great pleasure that our relationship continues to grow and develop. We are proud to be able to showcase the Longines brand, which reflects our values.”
