The craft of the automatic watch

A self-winding legacy

Delving into the intricacies of an automatic watch reveals a fascinating world of horological ingenuity. These exceptional timepieces harness kinetic energy generated by the wearer’s movement to wind the mainspring, eliminating the need for manual winding or battery replacements. At the heart of this mechanism lies the rotor—a semi-circular component that pivots with every motion, transforming kinetic energy into mechanical power.

Key components of precision

Essential parts such as the rotor, escapement, and balance wheel are central to the automatic watch’s precision. The rotor spins to wind the mainspring; the escapement releases energy in measured beats; the balance wheel oscillates to ensure accuracy. Together, they form a perfectly orchestrated system—each component a testament to LONGINES' dedication to fine watchmaking.

The allure of an automatic timepiece

More than a watch: a statement of excellence

Choosing an automatic watch reflects an appreciation for exceptional craftsmanship and precision engineering. Each model is a work of art, brought to life by artisans who masterfully merge centuries-old techniques with modern technology. With a legacy rooted in Swiss watchmaking, our automatic watches embody excellence and forward-thinking innovation.

Sustainable by nature

Beyond artistry, many automatic watches align with sustainable values—requiring no disposable batteries and often built with ethically sourced materials. Investing in an automatic watch is not only a gesture of refined taste but also a step toward mindful luxury and responsibility.

Maintaining your automatic watch

Preserve performance over time

Proper care ensures the longevity and performance of your automatic watch. We recommend a full service every 3 to 5 years to maintain optimal mechanics. Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures, magnetic fields, and moisture to protect its intricate components. Gently clean the exterior using a soft, lint-free cloth to preserve its brilliance.

Winding and adjustment tips

If your automatic watch has not been worn for some time, wind the crown clockwise approximately 30 turns to recharge it. To set the time:

  1. Pull the crown to the second position
  2. Turn to adjust the time
  3. Push the crown back in to restore water resistance

Should the watch stop or show irregular timekeeping, a manual wind or demagnetization may be necessary. For expert support, we recommend visiting a certified LONGINES service center—ensuring your timepiece remains a cherished companion for generations.
