Sapphire

Synthetic material used for the crystal that protects the watch dial and/or its mechanism. 

The sapphire crystal is obtained from a "core" of synthetic sapphire single-crystal made from cast alumina using an oxyhydrogen torch at more than 2000 °C.

The sapphire crystals combine zero porosity with total resistance to acid and alkaline substances and have a hardness of 9  on the Mohs scale. By comparison, mineral crystal has a hardness of only 6.5. Only one other stone can scratch a sapphire crystal, and it’s one that is not very common – a diamond.

ADVANTAGES:

Sapphire is scratch-resistant, except by diamonds, acid-resistant and practically unbreakable.
