Mother of Pearl
Long sought after for decoration, marquetry and jewellery making, mother of pearl comes from the interior coating of certain mollusc shells.
Mother of pearl is composed of crystals of aragonite (a form of calcium carbonate) and conchyolin, with iridescent reflections. It is formed by the regular superposition of layers of conchyolin, aragonite crystals and traces of water.
