Longines FEI World Cup™ in Zurich

Numerous visitors admired the outstanding performances of the world’s best riders and horses this weekend at the Hallenstadion. During the spectacular single Swiss leg of the Longines FEI World Cup™ series on Sunday, one of the highlights of this year’s Mercedes-Benz CSI Zürich, the best pair was spanish rider Eduardo Alvarez Aznar on Rokfeller de Pleville Bois Mar.   Max Kühner finished second while Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo reached the third place. The winner was presented with a beautiful Longines timepiece by Charles Villoz, Vice President of the winged hourglass brand, to honour his amazing performance.

The Official Watch of the Mercedes-Benz CSI Zurich was an elegant ladies model set with diamonds of its The Longines Equestrian Collection, created as an allegory of the equestrian world. This timepiece repeats the lines of the rectangular buckle found on the show bridle of the only Swiss horse breed, the Franches-Montagnes. This horse is native to the historical Swiss Jura area, a region that is dear to the winged hourglass brand since it is also the region where Longines was founded and earned its place within the inner circle of great watchmakers.

The partnership between Longines and the Mercedes-Benz CSI Zurich is highly representative of Longines' intrinsic values, such as elegance, performance and the passion for horses and equestrian sports and reaffirms the Swiss watch brand's commitment in this field. Longines' passion for equestrian sports dates back to 1878 with the production of a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount. Today, the brand is involved in show-jumping, flat racing, eventing, endurance, dressage and driving competitions.

Longines World's Best Racehorse & Best Horse Race 2016
Together with the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA), Longines is proud to celebrate excellence in horseracing with the Longines World’s Best Racehorse and Longines World’s Best Horse Race ceremony. With a rating of 134, Arrogate was declared the 2016 Longines World’s Best Racehorse, and Longines had the pleasure to time his great victories throughout the year, namely at the Breeders’ Cup Classic in California and the Travers Stakes in New York.

California Chrome, at 133, was honoured as the second-highest rated horse in the world during the ceremony held at the iconic hotel Claridge’s in London. Among other victories, the American-based runner travelled to the Middle East to win the 2016 Dubai World Cup.

Finally, the Australian mare Winx occupied third place in the 2016 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings. With a rating of 132, she was also the highest rated turf horse and highest rated filly/mare in the world.

This classification is established by international handicappers according to the performance of the horses in top international races. Last year, American Pharoah was named the 2015 Longines World’s Best Racehorse following his historical victories in the American Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The representatives of the three winning horses were presented with Longines watches by Juan-Carlos Capelli, Vice President of Longines and Head of International Marketing. The connections of Arrogate also received a replica of the Longines World’s Best Racehorse vase and a commemorative frame from Louis Romanet, IFHA Chairman.

One ceremony, two awards

During the same ceremony, Longines and the IFHA also named the Breeders’ Cup Classic as the 2016 Longines World’s Best Horse Race. Longines is proud to be the Official Partner and Official Timekeeper of this race, which attracts the best horses, breeders, trainers and owners from across the globe. In 2016, it took place at Santa Anita Park in California.

The Longines World’s Best Horse Race award recognizes the best-rated race of the highest-rated Group 1 international races as established by a panel of international handicappers. The ratings of the top four finishers in each race serve as basis for the assessment. In 2016, Arrogate defeated California Chrome in the Classic after a thrilling stretch run.

Craig Fravel, CEO and President of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and Bryan Pettigrew, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Sponsorship, received the award for the 2016 Longines World’s Best Horse Race. They were presented with an elegant Longines watch from Juan-Carlos Capelli and with a commemorative frame from Louis Romanet, IFHA Chairman. They also received a replica of the trophy of the Longines World’s Best Horse Race, which represents a proud horse head.

Longines and the IFHA, a long-term partnership and common values

Passionate about horses since 1878, Longines is proud to be the Official Partner and Official Watch of the IFHA, and to lend its name to the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings. The long-term partnership between Longines and the IFHA has seen the establishment of a prestigious set of awards aimed to honour horseracing’s elite. The Longines World’s Best Racehorse, the Longines World’s Best Horse Race, the Longines World’s Best Jockey and the Longines and IFHA International Award of Merit respectively pay tribute to the racehorses, horse races, jockeys and personalities who excel at the highest level of their sport.

Flagship Heritage - 60th Anniversary
Longines sold its first Flagship in 1957, and ever since, the collection has met with lasting success. This timeless watch, with its white dial, thin profile and fine fasteners, quickly won over Longines clients. A perfect blend of technical mastery and subdued elegance, the Flagship owes its name to the ship upon which the flag of the fleet’s commander in chief snaps in the wind. A symbol of Longines’ wishes for this new collection, this caravel is stamped on the back of Flagship watches.

Today, the Swiss watchmaking brand celebrates 60 years of this iconic collection, a symbol of quality, high precision and distinction, by launching the Flagship Heritage – 60th Anniversary 1957-2017. It was Longines Ambassador of Elegance herself, Kate Winslet, who chose the face of this anniversary timepiece. During a visit to the brand’s headquarters in Switzerland, the British actress fell in love with a model of the Swiss watchmaker. This is the timepiece from which Longines drew inspiration for the subdued and chic dial of this anniversary edition.

Available in steel, yellow gold or rose gold, the numbered timekeepers house an L609 mechanical calibre in their 38.5 mm case. Exclusive timepieces, the gold versions are limited to 60 watches while the steel versions are limited to 1957 watches. The brushed silvery dial is adorned with 8 indexes and 4 Arabic numerals, in yellow gold or rose gold colours. As with the original timepieces, the back of these commemorative watches bears a stamped caravel – the flagship. A brown leather watch strap completes this exceptional timepiece.
